Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s Zoo Academy is a two-year program for high school juniors and seniors in the Omaha and Council Bluffs metro. Zoo Academy provides students with learning experiences and career exploration through job shadowing opportunities and classes, with a focus on environmental and animal sciences. Second-year Zoo Academy students participate in a year-long service-learning project with the goal of improving team building, leadership and communication skills while tying the project to conservation. For this year’s service-learning project, the students were divided into small groups to plan, organize and execute the Zoo’s annual Earth Day event: Party for the Planet.
Party for the Planet activities will be found across the Zoo, including: a scavenger hunt throughout Zoo grounds, a sustainability market and Ambassador Animal presentations in Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Pavilion, Art for Conservation presented by Bryan High School and Joel Sartore’s National Geographic Photo Ark Mini Gallery in the Scott Aquarium Conference Center, Golf for the Gulf mini golf, vendor booths and a sticker fundraising booth on the Desert Dome Plaza and a giraffe keeper talk in the Syd and Betty Cate Giraffe Herd Rooms.
